Set Description:

The coinage of Queen Victoria is arguably exhibits the highest level of beauty and creativity among the issues of the British Empire. Among these, the coins of British India are some of the most captivating and beautiful.

The 1862 and later Indian issues of Queen Victoria feature a modified version of the Gothic Bust by William Wyon, one of Victoria's most famous and revered depictions.

The Indian version is a true meeting of East and West, featuring a youthful Victoria clothed in the attire of an Indian royal, creating a coinage fitting of the Empress of India, one of Victoria's most important titles.

Victoria, though a Western Monarch, was fascinated by the world of the East. Her foreign policy was consistently in favor of the Ottoman Empire throughout her reign and she took an active interest in that part of the world. In becoming the Empress of India, Victoria became an Eastern ruler in her own right.

Unlike Victoria's coinage in other lands, her youthful visage was never changed as she aged on Indian coinage aside from a short lived change on the gold denominations. This was probably because of how pleased she was with the Easternized Gothic portrait by Wyon. It really does show Victoria at her most beautiful and powerful and these coins have an enduring draw.

The Copper Quarter Anna is a great coin to choose to enjoy Wyon's superb artistry. The 25.18 mm size is excellent to display the design and the copper composition allows for a variety of looks for numismatists to enjoy. Another appealing aspect of Victoria's Quarter Annas is the fact that there are only 5 varieties of the 1862 coinage. In other denominations, there are more 1862 varieties than there are other dated issues combined! Some collectors enjoy this, others not so much.

Also, there are no huge rarities in the Victoria Quarter Anna set. But there are a couple of keys the lend a nice but attainable challenge for numismatists. In high grades, these are some of the most beautiful issues of Queen Victoria and World numismatics as a whole.
