Set Description:

The Chinese 10 Yuan Silver Panda is a series of modern bullion coins that were first issued in 1983 by the People’s Republic of China. The first silver Panda coins – issued in 1983, 1984 and 1985 - were proof quality, with a precious metal content of 27 grams of .900 fine silver, and a diameter of 38.6mm. Mintages were only 10,000 for each year. There were no 10 Yuan silver Panda coins in 1986. In 1987 the silver Panda coin specifications were changed. They were minted in proof quality, with 1 troy oz. of sterling silver (.925 fineness) and with an increased a diameter of 40mm. There were no 10 Yuan silver Panda coins minted in1988. In 1989, the silver panda coin specifications were changed once again. They were minted in proof and BU quality, with 1 troy oz. of .999 fine silver and with a diameter of 40mm. This specification became the standard for all 10 Yuan silver coins minted since 1989.

The Panda coins were mostly minted at three Chinese mints – the Shanghai Mint, the Shenyang Mint and the Shenzhen Guobao Mint. Unlike US coins, that carry mintmarks to distinguish their origin, Chinese mints do not carry mintmarks. Instead, there will usually be minor variations, such as date size, frosting or privy marks that are used to distinguish their origin.

Obverse Design:
Depicts the Temple of Heaven in the center with the words “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese Characters at the top and the year of issue at the bottom. This basic obverse design has remained the same since the beginning of the issue with minor changes around the perimeter of the coin to enhance the looks. The panda coin COA’s note the Temple of Heaven side as the Obverse and the Panda side as the reverse; however, NGC designates them just the opposite. I think I have to agree with NGC, the Panda side should be the obverse!!

Reverse Design:
Depicts various designs with the Giant Panda and Bamboo trees. The design of the Panda is changed every year (except for 2001 and 2002, which shared the same design).
