Set Description:

QUEEN VICTORIA, GOLD PROOF HALF SOVEREIGNS 1838-1901.

Queen Victoria (1819-1901), began her reign upon the death of her uncle on 20 June 1837. She enjoyed the longest reign of any monarch so far. Many fine types and varieties of gold coinage were produced during Victoria's reign, including the half-sovereign.
Proof half-sovereigns were struck by the Royal Mint during Victoria's reign in three different designs.
The 'Young Head' design was first appeared in 1839 with two issues, one with plain edge and one with reeded edge. It featured on the obverse the Young bust of the Queen facing left, and on the reverse the Ensigns Armorial of the United Kingdom within a garnished shield surmounted by a crown. Mintage: 1230.The second issue of this "Young Head" design was struck in 1853. Mintage: Unrecorded.
The "Jubilee Head" design was struck during the Queen's Golden Jubilee year 1887. It featured on the obverse the bust of the Queen facing left and wearing a small crown and on the reverse the Ensigns Armorial of the United Kingdom within a garnished shield and surmounted by a royal crown. Mintage: 797.
The "Old Head" design was last struck in 1893 and featured on the obverse the bust of the Queen facing left, veiled and draped, and on the reverse the design of St. George mounted with streamer flowing from helmet, slaying the Dragon with sword. Mintage: 773.
