Set Description:

No noteworthy coins have appeared for purchase during the course of the last 12 months, or at least none at prices which were realistic - there are a lot of greedy sellers out there, who do not even appear to be open to offers, so this area of collecting has tended to stagnate.

These coins were more probably likely to have been melted down over the years for their silver content - this because those left in circulation after the introduction of the florin saw considerable wear and as such were not sufficiently attractive for collectors to keep , also the value in those times was quite significant so unlike the sixpences these represented a large sum of money tied up and unavailable to spend.

There has been little activity in the Registry either during the last 12 months which tends to confirm the relative scarcity of this denomination - thus making them already an expensive coin to buy in nice condition, even for common dates. I suspect that there may be an element of under-value for some dates, but not such that it is worth paying some of the prices being seen. Certainly, there has been little available at the usual international auctions.

This is a very brief summary of the Victorian halfcrown, a nice chunky piece of history which I am still researching.

There are some very difficult dates in this reign notably the 1841 coin and the 1839, both of which are of a similar scarcity to the 1863 florin. Having said that, there are a few specimens of the 1841 coin in the NGC Population Report and coins have appeared more frequently than opinion suggests - the price though underlines the fact that it is hard to acquire.

Whereas the 1839 coin is truly rare with just one coin in a lowly grade featuring in the NGC Population Report - nevertheless this was a must for purchase at a Heritage auction earlier this year. Since I have been looking, only one other specimen of this date has appeared and that in poor condition.

I aim to acquire the best specimens affordable so inevitably there will initially be some AU coins, but even these are very attractive.

It is a shame that these coins have not yet attracted a larger following but that leaves the field a little more open for me to consolidate my collection!

Now some facts:

The early issues of Queen Victoria up to 1850 had a portrait in fairly high relief.

In the years 1851 to 1873 no halfcrowns were issued for circulation, as the florin was used in its place. Proofs are known dated 1853 (from the Proof Set of that year), 1862 and 1864.

Halfcrowns are known dated between 1866 and 1871, but these are forgeries, almost without exception.

When the halfcrown was reintroduced in 1874 a lower relief portrait of the Queen was used. Both types had a similar reverse showing a coat of arms with a wreath around. This sometimes causes confusuion with the crown, which had the same reverse design.

Design changes took place in 1887 (the Jubilee issue) and 1893 (the Old or Veiled Head issue). Minor variations in the reverse of the Veiled Head issues are known, mainly distinguished by the length of the border teeth.
