The 1969 Kennedy Half Dollar would represent the last coin of the series struck and released for circulation with a composition of 40% silver. This composition, which contains a net weight of 0.14792 troy ounces of pure silver had been used for the denomination starting in 1965. The silver content provides any example of this coin with a premium value based on the intrinsic value.
During the year, circulating half dollars were struck at the Denver Mint and carried the “D” mint mark. Proof examples of the coin, which were included only in US Mint issued proof sets, were struck at the San Francisco Mint and carried the “S” mint mark.
As with other coins from this portion of the Kennedy Half Dollar series, circulation strikes are desirable in higher grades of MS66 or MS67. The proof strikes are desirable with cameo or deep cameo contrast.

The 1970 Kennedy Half Dollar was produced in very limited numbers. This year would also mark the final year that half dollars were struck in 40% silver, besides the special collector version coins that would be produced in later years.
The United States Mint did not produce circulation strike versions of the coin for general release, rather only a limited number were struck for issuance within the 1970 Mint Set. This was an extremely unusual occurrence at the time. The 1970-D Kennedy Half Dollar ended up with a mintage of 2,150,000, which was miniscule when compared to the mintages for earlier years of the series.
Proof versions of the coin were also struck for inclusion within the 1970 Proof Set. Production was similarly low at 2,632,810, although this was the typical level for proof coinage of this era.

The 1972 Kennedy Half Dollar was the second year issued in the copper clad composition. Mintages remained relatively high with nearly 300 million coins produced across two mint facilities. As was the case for the previous year, the Denver Mint issue more frequently encountered in high grades, while the Philadelphia Mint issue can be difficult, especially in MS67.
Proof coins were minted in San Francisco and included in the US Mint’s annual proof set. Collectors seek out examples of this coin which display deep cameo contrast on both the obverse and reverse. It is often possible to cherry pick 1972 Proof Sets to find choice Kennedy Halves.

The 1973 Kennedy Half Dollar was struck for circulation at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. Production registered a lull between the higher previous and subsequent years. Typically, the Denver Mint coins will be more sharply struck and in higher grades. Each is difficult to find in PCGS or NGC MS67.
The proof version of the coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint and carries the “S” mint mark. Starting this year, it became standard for the majority of proof coins to display deep cameo frosting on both the obverse and reverse.

The 1988 Kennedy Half Dollar saw production return to the normal pattern. Coins were struck for circulation at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, albeit in small numbers. The proof version of the coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint for inclusion within the annual proof set.
The highest graded circulation strikes are just a few pieces that have been graded MS68 by the major grading services PCGS and NGC. The population of highest graded proof coins is more abundant with more than 200 examples graded PCGS PR70DCAM or NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo.

The 1998 Kennedy Half Dollar saw mintages decline for the circulation strike versions produced at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. Each saw mintages of around 15 million coins, compared to around 20 million for the prior year.
In addition to the clad proof and 90% silver proof versions, a special collector version of the coin was also available this year. The 1998 Matte Proof Kennedy Half Dollar was included in a the Kennedy Collector’s Set issued for the commemorative coin program honoring Robert F. Kennedy. Due to the limited number of sets sold, the matte proof coin has a low mintage and is considered one of the modern keys of the series.

The production levels for the half dollar saw a surprising jump to start the new decade and millennium. The 2000 Kennedy Half Dollar saw production for circulation of 22,600,000 at the Philadelphia Mint and 19,466,000 at the Denver Mint. These levels were roughly double the mintages seen in the previous year.
In general, circulating coin production figures were much higher at the United States Mint driven by a robust economy and renewed interest in collector spurred by the 50 State Quarters Program. More people were paying attention to their pocket change and saving coins from circulation rather than spending them. Although the half dollars were rarely seen in circulation at this point, some banks could still provide original wrapped rolls.
The mintages for the 2000-S Proof Kennedy Half Dollars rose for both the clad composition and 90% silver composition coins. This was the result of high sales of the annual proof sets containing the coins. Each of these issues remain in steady supply for present day collectors.

Continuing the situation established in the previous year, the 2003 Kennedy Half Dollar was not produced for circulation. Rather the coins were produced in limited quantities at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint for direct sales to collectors. The San Francisco Mint also produced two different proof version of the coins for inclusion within annual coin sets.
Starting on January 29, 2003, the US Mint began to accept orders for collectors for circulation strike versions of the coin. The half dollars could be ordered in two roll sets, containing one roll from each mint facility, or in $100 face value bags, containing an even mix of coins from each facility. These were packaged in distinctive wrappers or canvas bags with an indication of the year, face value, and mint mark. Circulation strike coins were also available in the annual uncirculated coin set.
The proof versions of the coin were offered later in the year, as included within the 2003 Proof Set and 2003 Silver Proof Set. The first set containing the coin struck in the standard composition of copper-nickel clad, while the second set contained the coin struck in a special composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. The silver proof version saw a jump in mintage to 1,125,755 compared to 892,229 in the prior year.

The 2004 Kennedy Half Dollar was an issue produced only for collectors. This included the circulation strike versions of the coin, which were sold primarily at a premium to face value in rolls or bags, and the proof versions of the coin, which were sold within annual coin sets offered by the United States Mint.
The circulation strike versions were sold within two roll sets, containing one roll from the Philadelphia Mint and one roll from the Denver Mint, priced at $35.50 each. Also available were 200-coin bags, containing an equal number of coins from each mint, priced at $135.00 each. A final source of the coins was the annual uncirculated mint set, which included examples of each of the coins struck by the Mint for the year. The 2004-P and 2004-D half dollars had final mintages of 2,900,000 each.
The 2004-S proof and silver proof half dollars were available in the annual proof sets from the Mint. The first set contained each of the coins issued by the Mint for the year struck at the San Francisco Mint in proof quality in their standard compositions. The second set contained the dime, quarters, and half dollars struck in 90% silver, with the remaining coins struck in standard compositions. These sets were priced at $22.95 and $37.95.

Later in the year on June 1, 2009, the proof version of the Kennedy Half Dollar made its first appearance within the annual proof set. This was followed by the 90% silver proof version of the coin within the annual silver proof set on July 17. The final mintages for these coins, based on total set sales, reached 1,482,502 and 697,365, respectively.
On October 1, 2009, the satin finish versions of the half dollar struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint were made available within the 2009 Uncirculated Coin Set.
