The 1857-S gold dollar has proven to be very elusive for me. There appear to be only about 200 survivors in all grades with only a couple of dozen of them in mint state.

The 1858-S Gold Dollar is a difficult coin to find. From a tiny mintage of only 10,000 pieces only a couple of hundred or so coins survive today. Because the number of collectors desiring this coin is limited, prices for this scarce date remain reasonable.

Although not designated as such on the slab, this coin is the rare Breen 6068 variety with an inverted mintmark. The lower curve of the "S" is smaller than the upper curve. Normally the lower curve is larger than the upper curve.

From a mintage of 72,120 coins, only about 500 survive today. Mint state pieces are rare with only about 80 different coins slabbed, all at the low end of the mint state scale. This scarce coin, which has a good strike and luster, is one of about 90 AU-58 pieces.

Only 5,000 pieces were struck by the San Francisco Mint in 1876. This is the 2nd. lowest mintage for any San Francisco struck quarter eagle. All coins were struck from a single pair of dies and the hair and feathers always come weakly struck. Like it's Philadelphia cousin, all business strikes have a raised bar on the neck near the jaw caused by foreign matter adhering to the hub when the die was sunk into it.

This date had a mintage of 35,400 coins. Nearly 750 coins have been slabbed by the two major grading services. This coin would probably have received a higher grade but for a tiny rim mark above the 10th. star.
