2. US declares war on Germany and enters World War I.
3. Charles Borel on Omar Khayyam wins the 43rd Kentucky Derby.
4. A Parisian dancer, Mata Hari is executed for espionage by the French
Government after being convicted of passing military secrets to Germany.
5. October Revolution in Russia, Lenin and the Bolsheviks seize power,
capture the Winter Palace, overthrowing Provisional Government.
6. The 18th Amendment, authorizing prohibition of alcohol, is approved by the
US congress and sent to the states for ratification.
