CGC Signature Series November Convention Summary

Posted: 12/4/2007 by Kevin Boyd, CGC Signature Series Director

2007 has been a record setting year for Signature Series submissions at conventions, so it is fitting that the last month for shows before the holiday season would see three important shows for the prestigious Signature Series yellow label.

November 16-18 was a double-whammy, as we had to split our teams between two major conventions to handle Signature Series requests:

- Wizard World Texas in Arlington, was handled by Paul Litch and Shawn Caffrey, with assistance from local Signature Series Witness Kris Moore ("thecollector" on the chat boards). Highlights of the show included Smallville's new Supergirl Laura Vandervoort as well as comics celebrities like J. Scott Campbell, Ethan Van Sciver, Arthur Suydam, Adam Kubert, Greg Pak and many more. Top requested Signature Series creator? Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies 2), followed closely by Marc Silvestri (X-Men: Messiah Complex).

- Big Apple Conventions' The National Comic Book & Toy Expo took place in Manhattan at the Penn Plaza Pavillion, and Signature Series requests were handled by myself, Kevin Boyd, with assistance from Joe Pierson and local Signature Series Witness Cosimo Torello. Highlights included the stars of NBC's hit show Heroes - Hayden Panettiere and Kristen Bell, as well as comics celebrities Neal Adams, Adam Hughes, Sergio Aragones, Mark Evanier, Tim Sale, Darwyn Cooke and many more. Top requested Signature Series creator? Tim Sale (Heroes, Batman: The Long Halloween), followed closely by the girls from Heroes.

The following weekend, November 24-25, I was off to Columbus, Ohio for CGC's final show of the year, the Mid-Ohio Con. The Thanksgiving weekend show was CGC's first time attending and the people of Ohio seemed very glad to see CGC and take advantage of the Signature Series service. Highlights included actor Doug Jones (Abe Sapien - Hellboy, the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) and comics celebrities Arthur Suydam, Barry Kitson, Steve Rude, Roger Stern, Sergio Aragones and the "Men of Bronze" (Rich Buckler, Keith Pollard and many more). Top requested Signature Series creator? Arthur Suydam (Marvel Zombies 2), followed closely by Roger Stern (writer on many classic Marvel and DC titles including Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, the Avengers and Superman).

Aside from the various comics that were signed and submitted for Signature Series at these events, the Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America #3 sketch cover craze continued as many Witnesses and fans made arrangements with artists appearing at these events to do sketches on the covers. Arthur Suydam's version of the zombie Colonel America from Marvel Zombies was a popular choice at the Texas and Mid-Ohio shows. Other artists that contributed art for sketch covers included Marc Wolfe, Michael Golden, Tim Sale, Sergio Aragones, just to name a few.

Now that the 2007 convention season has come to a close, we can all enjoy a nice break to catch up on our work at home and enjoy the holiday season with friends and family. 2008's going to be another busy convention year for CGC Signature Series, and it starts in January with the Phoenix Comicon!
