Rarities Abound in Bowers and Merena’s Official March 2006 Baltimore Auction

Posted on 3/3/2006

Highlights Include the 1928 Hawaiian Commemorative Half Originally Owned by the Coin’s Designer

On March 16-17, Bowers and Merena will be traveling to Maryland to conduct the Official Auction of the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention. The sale is scheduled for three sessions, and it will be conducted at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore (410-528-1234). Online bids are currently being accepted at the Bowers and Merena website, www.bowersandmerena.com, where one can also view all lots in the online catalog.

“The Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention is currently in its 34th year, and the show keeps getting bigger and better every year,” said Bowers and Merena President Steve Deeds. “In fact, the show has added 50% more bourse tables to take its place as one of the true ‘super-bourse’ conventions of the 21st century. We have seen strong consignor participation in our Official Auction of the March Convention. A definite highlight of this sale is a 1928 Hawaiian Sesquicentennial Commemorative Half Dollar certified Proof-66 NGC (Census: 2/0). This piece was the eighth presented out of just 50 by the Captain Cook Sesquicentennial Commission, and the original owner was Juliette Mae Frazer, designer of the coin.”

According to Jeff Ambio, Bowers and Merena’s Director of Numismatics: “We are delighted to be offering a partial 1873 proof set in our Official Auction of the March 2006 Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention. Two specimens in this set are of particular importance. They are both die trial strikings of the 1873 Liberty Double Eagle, the first in copper—Judd-1344—and the other in aluminum—Judd-1345. The Judd-1344 example has been graded Proof-61 Red and Brown by NGC, and it has been double struck after rotating in the collar. The Judd-1345 coin is an extraordinary Proof-66 Cameo at the same service.”
