BRS Legacy Collection Complete by Date and Denomination

NGC has graded and encapsulated a collection that is likely never to be equaled. Comprising a total of 32 coins, the BRS Legacy Collection of matte proof and satin proof United States gold pieces spans the years 1908 through 1915. It is complete from quarter eagle through double eagle.

In addition to its completeness, the BRS Legacy Collection of matte proof gold coins is simply phenomenal in its quality. The average grade for these coins is a stunning PF 67, and no less than five of them grade an almost unheard of PF 68.

Matte and satin proof gold coins are of the highest rarity, irrespective of date or denomination. Annual sales rarely exceeded a few dozen pieces, and many of these were later spent or otherwise lost to numismatics during hard times.

Interested in coin collecting since childhood, the unnamed owner of the BRS Legacy Collection set aside his hobby during college and while establishing his business, which is now a highly respected, national company. His passion is so strong that he is not satisfied with anything less than the very best examples for a given issue. As testament to his eye for quality, four of his matte proofs carry the rare and highly coveted NGC star () designation for outstanding eye quality.

The BRS Legacy Collection was assembled under the guidance of Laura Sperber, President of Legend Numismatics in Lincroft, New Jersey, who is impressed by its owner’s determination: “His complete, finest graded Matte Proof Gold set is a testament to his knowledge, skill, and collecting passions,” remarked Sperber. “Working with BRS has been a thrill.”

Among the highlights of this collection are two beauties from the satin proof years of 1909 and 1910. The 1909 half eagle and 1910 eagle each grade an amazing PF 67. By far the most memorable coin in this remarkable collection is the magnificent 1912 matte double eagle, which grades no less than an unbelievable PF 68!

NGC Chairman Mark Salzberg has seen many outstanding collections, but this one is exceptional. “This is a very important collection,” Salzberg stated. “Most collectors are delighted to own even a single matte proof gold coin, but to acquire them all while never wavering in quality is a goal few can achieve.”
