Comment:
These pieces were sold to collectors as part complete year sets in copper.

The Judd reference cites a population of five Judd-602 representatives, and USPatterns.com confirms fewer than a half dozen pieces known. Indeed, this particular example remained part of such a set through its 1987 sale, where the grouping brought $33,000. Brick-red surfaces feature flashy, iridescent accents of rose and violet color. Carbon is more apparent on the obverse, with several notable spots that aid in pedigree-tracking.
