This National Commemorative Medal was struck for and distributed by the West Virginia Centennial Commission. Per the accompanying certificate, the obverse depicts the official West Virginia Centennial Emblem, “a dynamic, forward looking space age image stylized from two giant telescopes located in Green Bank, West Virginia.” The reverse depicts the State Seal, “ inserted in its circumference the legend ‘State of West Virginia’ with the motto ‘Montani Semper Liberi!’ - Mountaineers always free!” Sources disagree on whether the bronze medals are proof or just proof like.
