Ninth year of issue.

James Earle Fraser was an American sculptor during the first half of the 20th century. He was an important member of the Commission of Fine Arts; the organization that selects the winning design from all submissions for all new coins to be minted. The American Buffalo is a 24-karat gold coin featuring James Fraser's designs based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel.

The US Mint released the 2014 Gold Proof Buffalo on May 8, 2014. The release day price was $1,640.00; the price of gold was $1,289.39. Total sales for the 2014 Gold Proof dropped again as the excitement had worn off from the release of the 2013 Reverse Proof. With the mild frenzy of 2013 over, sales returned to 2012 levels at 20,557 coins sold.
