Lyman Allen #3.01 (KM #179) - Mintage: 15,790,492
This issue is the first One Centavo to bear the new Commonwealth Reverse, foreshadowed by the 3 commemorative coins designed by Ambrosio Morales minted in 1936. Minted at the US branch mint in Manila, this coin is generally poorly struck, but surprisingly easy to locate in high mint state, red grades. Well struck examples do exist, but are very rare. This is the only year that coins were stuck with this style of mint mark. It did not strike up well and, on many coins, the mint mark is so faint that it appears to be completely missing. The parallel vertical sides were modified for 1938 such that the new mint mark style appears as an inverted "W."
This particular coin exhibits the generally weak strike for this year which is particularly noticeable in the scroll lettering and shield emblem above the date.
Varieties: None cataloged for this year.
Date acquired: 7/1/2007 (already graded by NGC)
