From the one-room schoolhouse to the virtual classroom, Iowa has a strong foundation in education,” said Iowa’s Governor Vilsack. That is the reason the 29th Statehood quarter features a one-room schoolhouse with a teacher and students planting a tree. The design of this 2004 Statehood quarter is based on a painting by Iowa’s own artist - the renowned Grant Wood. The inscription at the upper right reads FOUNDATION IN EDUCATION. Above it is the statehood date 1846.
