An early proof issue in the Seated half dollar series, the 1859 was apparently a poor seller with the public at the time of production. As such, many of the 800 proofs that the Mint originally struck were simply tossed back into the melting pot. A fortunate specimen, the present example also managed to survive with graciously preserved surfaces. Both sides are untoned, with deep, watery reflectivity in the fields, and rich frosting on the central devices. In typical proof style, the strike is needle-sharp down to the last star centril and neck feather.
