Owner Comments:

Large Over Small Date. Breen-5478. A rare business strike variety of an otherwise difficult low mintage issue that is elusive in mint state (as of February 1992, Breen was aware of only two specimens of the variety, and Bowers later confirmed another (certified MS60 by PCGS)). This variety was created by punching the date with the half dollar logotype, effacing the date (as made) and then repunching it with the dollar date. In this example traces of the original 1 and 8 can be seen above the final position of these numerals. This is a highly reflective coin that has a significant amount of mint frost on the devices as well, resulting in a proof-like finish with moderate cameo contrast. Sharply struck throughout, most of each side is brilliant with beautiful rings of deep bluish-green and crimson-gold iridescence around the obverse periphery. This Gem is among the finest known of the issue, with only five other specimens certified by NGC and PCGS as MS65, and none are finer [April 2006]. ex-Jack Lee
