FROM THE BANK OF KOREA: This coin was issued on November 3, 2010 to commemorate the G20 Summit 2010 held in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

OBVERSE: In the center is the inscription “G20”, surrounding the G20 inscription in a semicircle are the names of the G20 member countries. On the lower half is depicted an image of Gwanghwamun (the main gate of Seoul’s Gyeongbokgung Palace), the depiction of Gwanghwamun is meant to symbolize Korea’s new position as a global leader. The Gate at the time was recently reopened to the public after having been moved and rebuilt, the Gate was officially opened to the public during Korea’s Independence Day celebrations, August 15, 2010. This was just a few months prior to the G20 Summit, making this a dual purpose commemorative (whether or not, that was the intent). At the top of the rim is inscribed 서울 G20 정상회의2010 (THE G20 SEOUL SUMMIT, 2010), at the bottom of the rim is inscribed 한국은행 (The Bank of Korea), 2010 ( The Year of Issue) and 삼만원 (30,000 Won) .

REVERSE: Center is depicted a Chung-sa-cho-rong (a traditional Korean lantern with a red-and-blue silk shade), symbolizing the roll the G20 Seoul Summit was aspiring to take, (a light to guide the world economy). At the top in a semicircle is inscribed ‘SHARED GROWTH BEYOND CRISIS’, the official slogan of the Summit. At the bottom in a semicircle is inscribed THE BANK OF KOREA (the issuing authority) and 30000 WON (the denomination).

NOTES: The 2010 G20 Seoul Summit was the fifth meeting of the G20 heads of government, to discuss the global financial system and the world economy. The Summit was held in Seoul South Korea on November 11-12, 2010. This coin was released to commemorate the Summit. The Republic of Korea was the first non G8 nation to host a G20 leaders’ Summit.

The size and weight of the planchet was reduced, this is the second different size planchet used for the 30000 won coins. The 2008 planchet was 35mm x 23g, the 2010 is 33mm x 19g. The planchets will continue to reduce in size later in the series.
