Owner Comments:
1798- NGC AU Details (Scratched). Large 8, 14 stars variety. DB-3. The reverse is the terminal die state d and was probably coined shortly before the reverse die failed. An otherwise AU50+ coin that has been scratched on the obverse and less so on the reverse. However, I could not pass it up as various authorities estimate that only 35 to 50 examples of this variety still exist out of an estimated mintage of 2,500 to 3,500 coins. It is the general concensus that the 14th reverse star resulted from the die makers inattention to his work. In other words it was a boo boo.
