FROM THE BANK OF KOREA: The Bank of Korea has decided to issue three new Korean National Parks Commemorative Coins (Deogyusan, Mudeungsan and Hallyeohaesang) on October 4 (Thursday), as part of a commemorative coin series, in an effort to make the beauty of Korea’s natural environment and the future value of ecological preservation more widely known.
OBVERSE: Center, a panoramic depiction of Lighthouse Island, a small islet connected to Somaemuldo Island by a narrow land bridge (called the Mosses Crossing) which is only accessible at low tide. With the sea stretching into the horizon, the three vertical rock formations at center are said to resemble the back of a dinosaur and atop of the bluff is the lighthouse. In the foreground the sea ends at a proof field meant to resemble the coast line from where you are viewing the scene. At the top running in a semicircle around the rim is inscribed 한국의 국립공원 / 한려 해상 (Korean National Parks / Hallyeohaesang). At the bottom of the coin running in a semicircle around the rim is inscribed 2018/ 한국은행 / 삼만원 (Year of issue / Bank of Korea / 30,000 Won).
REVERSE: Center, is depicted the Fairy Pitta (Pitta nympha) a Class II endangered species, perched on a branch. At 3 o’clock, inset in a circle is depicted the Eelgrass (Zostera marina). These are considered the two flagship species (Flora and Fauna) of Hallyeohaesang National Park. At the top of the rim running in a semicircle is inscribed ‘Korean National Parks / Hallyeohaesang’, at the bottom of the reverse running in a semicircle around the rim is inscribed ‘2018 / THE BANK OF KOREA / 30000 WON’ (year of issue / issuing party / denomination).
NOTES: The mintage was cut in half from 20,000 of each coin to 10,000 of each coin. The mintages were again split between single coin offerings and sets, 2,000 of each coin available individually and 8,000 of each coin placed into sets, distributed by KOMSCO.
Hallyeohaesang was designated as a National Park in 1968 and is one of 4 Marine & Costal parks in Korea. Hallyeohaesang was the 4th National Park in Korea and is comprised of over 100 islands.
2018 marked the 50th anniversary of the designation of Hallyeohaesang as the fourth national park in Korea, in 1968. Giving the Hallyeohaesang coin double designation as both being in the National Parks Coin series and as a 50th Anniversary Commemorative coin.
