Jefferson is likely the person most responsible for our monetary system and so having the image of Liberty as she appeared on the coins of the time is truly appropriate for him. He and Hamilton had minor but significant differences of opinion on the denominations. He had a scientific mind and as such reasoned that since the Spanish 8 Reale coin was so widely accepted that we should pattern our "Dollar" after it. He accomplished the Louisiana purchase, this more than doubled the landmass of our fledgling country.
On the other hand Jefferson was a slave holder and it is widely known that, after his wife's death, he took up with the woman salve, Sally Hemings, whom he had feelings for. They had children (genetically proved) and at his death he not only freed his slaves but left a substantial inheritance to Ms. Hemings, his African American love. This would suggest that an African American visage of Miss Liberty might have been most appropriate for his first spouse coin...
