Owner Comments:

WB-106. Not only does this coin apparently not exist in gem, it is extremely rare in any uncirculated grade. Its R8- status, listed in the W&B guide, is confirmed by PCGS having graded only a lone coin above AU-58 (a 62), and NGC having found only three, a 61, a 62, and this 63. Some significant marks in the left obverse field and one on Liberty's head limit the grade. Still an attractive piece for this difficult date. Bought in an ANR auction January 2005, lot 541, of the Kennywood Collection. Previously from the Pryor Collection, January, 1996, lot 125. Amazingly the Pryor Collection had two mint state specimens of this rarity, and both resurfaced in the Kennywood Collection. Pryor had acquired this coin at the ANA sale in 1975. These two coins are the only certified mint state coins to appear in more than a decade. Not in Eliasberg (VF), Norweb (EF), Richmond (XF45), or Queller (AU). The Wolfson coin sold by Stack's in 1963 does remain a possible third. R8 seems fully justified.
