Owner Comments:

The public objections over the appearance of Victor David Brenner's initials on the reverse of the Lincoln Cent in 1909 resulted in rapid adjustment. The offending letters were removed from the bottom of the reverse thus creating the "Plain" type Lincoln Wheat Cent. This change was reflected on the Matte Proof coins, thus convincing some collectors to order an additional minor coin Proof set, which contained the cent and the nickel. The reason why the 1909 Proof Liberty Nickel has such a high Proof mintage is that collectors wanted example of the Indian, Lincoln VDB and Lincoln Plain cents in their collections, ordering the cent alone was not an option.

The coin shown above is an almost flawless example of the 1909 Plain Lincoln Cent in Matte Proof. The picture does not show the superior sharpness of the design of this piece, and in future months I will try to take a better photo.
