||QUARTER DOLLARS - BARBER LIBERTY HEAD
||25C 1895 O
||NGC MS 68
Alone atop the condition charts this coin was bought at a Bowers and Merena sale in September, 1998, (lot 2057). The catalogue notes a long and distinguished provenance tracing the coin back to the Newcombe collection in 1914 (Torok, Gilhousen, even Mark Salzburg [!] among others). With the mint mark upright and far right over the D (one of four known positions) makes this coin an example of a DL-204 in David Lawrence's Complete Guide to Barber Quarters. Noted in Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of US Coins. Breen is said to have commented that this is the finest known US quarter regardless of date. Needless to say a numismatic treasure.
