THIS COIN: Flashy and stunning Gem specimen. Cartwheel luster adorns near perfect fields. A high end original. Type I reverse.
BACKGROUND: The production quantity by the San Francisco Mint in 1875 was high with 4,487,000 business strikes. Most reverse varieties are Type I since it is believed that the Type II dies, produced at the Philadelphia Mint, did not reach San Francisco until late in the year. It is estimated that only about 10%-20% of the 1875-S production are the Type II reverse variety.
