There was no 1oz silver panda made in 1988. The 1989 panda was the first year that both proof and BU quality coins were made. The silver fineness was increased to 0.999 purity and the weight and fineness were printed on the panda side of coin for the first time (it was noted in both Chinese writing and English writing). The proof coin included a “P” mark on the panda side to denote the proof quality. The proof and BU coins were minted at the China Mint Company.

Mintage was 255,000 BU and 25,000 Proof.
