Mintage a miniscule 3,200 pieces.
Purchased at my very first FUN show in the Heritage January 2014 FUN Show auction where it was described as follows: 1871 $5 AU55 PCGS. This post-Civil War strike amounted to a meager 3,230 pieces, during a year when the Philadelphia Mint's priorities lay elsewhere than gold coinage (minor coinage and silver dollars were the winners of this neglect). This Choice AU piece displays the expected prooflike tendencies amid orange-red surfaces that show a bold strike and handsome eye appeal
