Owner Comments:
THIS COIN: From the BATTLE BORN Collection of Mint State Trade Dollars, this coin is graded MS 65 with only one graded higher. This well preserved GEM specimen shows delicate iridescent hues on both surfaces and strong strike definition. There are no distracting discolorations, abrasions or blemishes on either side. The reverse bears a medium mint mark (medium width between the CCs).
BACKGROUND: Almost all Trade Dollars are difficult to locate in Choice and especially Gem conditions, even when they are purported to be common dates. Although there are exceptions, San Francisco Mint issues are most plentiful, followed by the Philadelphia and Carson City Mints. In 1874 1,373,200 pieces were shipped to China. All early year Trade Dollars were not yet popular with collectors and even less popular were those collecting mint mark specimens. Additionally, many strikes from the Carson City Mint in 1874 were weak and/or irregular, accounting for very few graded in the higher mint state conditions.
