||HALF DIMES - SEATED LIBERTY, LEGEND OBVERSE
||NGC MS 67
A spectacular coin, but the question remains, proof or unc? With only one set of dies used to strike 13,000 coins for circulation along with 500 proofs all characteristics are identical. With so few srikes almost all coins struck for circulation qualify as prooflike first strikes. The recut 1 and 8 on the date, the doubling of the S in STATES are the same on both. NGC has come down on the side of this coin being mint state. And while I do not disagree, the incredibly sharp strike and particulary the firm definition of the denticles throughout give me pause (I do have another coin of this date graded MS-67 by PCGS, an unquestioned unc, and the denticles are more rounded and somewhat uneven in length on the obverse, being slightly shorter immediately below the date). Whatever. The coin is truly spectacular and the eye appeal magnificent. Even if others finally decide this coin to be a proof, I just had to post this beautiful picture. Bought from Joe O'Connor, February 2004.
