The 1889-S eagle was the smallest branch mint gold coin made in the year, and it appears that San Francisco went out of its way to produce nice ones. This splendid near-Gem boasts radiant cartwheel luster that would be not at all out of place on a Morgan dollar. Deep orange-gold coloration complementing hazel accents at the rims further increases the appeal. The strike is full, and only a single straight scrape across Liberty's cheek requires singular notice. Population: 18 in 64, 1 finer
