||HALF DOLLARS - SEATED LIBERTY, NO MOTTO

||NGC MS 64
1849/1849, WB-102. A pristine example of this rare (R8 in mint state) double date. Bought at the Stacks/Bowers auction of the Dick Osburn collection, August 2011, lot 7034. There were many top pops (e.g. 1855-S, 1870-CC) in this outstanding collection assembled over many years by Dick from his perch as a major dealer in Seated coinage, but this coin stood out to me as the piece de resistance. Only two coins of this variety have been graded in mint state,and this coin at MS-64 is the finer. I hesistate to say finest known as one cannot be sure that a variety this rare has been fully identified and slabbed. However Bowers did make that claim in the catalogue. An intriguing overdate with the base of an extra 1 and extra 4 clearly present to the left of the numerals in the date. Plus there are a few extra 9s thrown in both in the rock above and the dentils below. The coin itself is strong for the grade. Well struck with clean surfaces and even natural toning. The only mark worth noting is on the reverse below the eagle just above the F in HALF. I would note one other feature which might be of interest. On the obverse it looks very preliminarily as if a cud could be starting to form at 7:00.
