NGC US Coin Census for Walking Liberty Half Dollars (1916-1947)

Owner Comments:

The 1918-S Walking Liberty half dollar was produced in large quantities because of a pressing need for coinage in the booming economy at the end of World War I. Few examples were saved by collectors, and the issue is scarce-to-rare in Mint State grades today, despite the relatively large mintage of 10,282,000 pieces.

The present coin is an attractive Choice specimen, with gold and russet toning and bright mint luster. This coin also displays a beautiful pearly silver natural tone with the darker highlights about the perimeter.

This piece has been CAC approved for PQ eye appeal. The 1918-S is unknown with full striking details, and this example displays well above average striking details on Liberty's hand and thumb but, as is usually the case, the head displays some softness in the strike.

Important varieties:

V 101 – Doubled S east, which is most likely machine doubling.
