Owner Comments:
This coin was brought from Rick Snow. It is one of the most challenging coin to find in nice mint state condition in the Indian series. It is by no means rare, however. Just look in any major auction and you will see 5 to 15 of these coins in grades from AG to lower mint state. The low mintage figure is due to the perception that there were too many subsidiary coins in circulation, so much so, that a recall of cents was undertaken to remove excess coins and convert old large cents and copper nickel cents to the new bronze small cents. The low population numbers for this coin in higher grades is also due in part to the fact that in 1877 the U.S. finances were such that coins were not being set aside, they were being spent. Although it is graded Brown, on a good day, I think it would grade red-brown. It is a pleasing example with somewhat mushy details on America and in the date at the 77. I have seen these issues on many of the 1877 Indians.
