Owner Comments:
Doug Winter rates the 1851-D as the second most common Dahlonega mint gold dollar, but it is still a scarce piece, especially with original surfaces that have not been cleaned. Overall Winter estimates that there are 115 to 160 examples of this coin in the AU grades and just 15 to 20 pieces in Mint State. The mintage was 9,882 pieces.
The piece pictured above is an example of "crusty gold" with original surfaces. The piece as a few more surface marks than I would have liked, but it won me over because of its originality.
