Owner Comments:
With a business strike mintage of only 14,750 pieces, the 1876 Twenty Cent piece is a scarce coin. The Red Book authors speculate a fair number of the 1876-P double dimes were destroyed after government officials determined that the Twenty Cent piece was not a viable denomination because of it similarity in size to the quarter. Current estimates place the surviving population for the 1876 Twenty Cent piece at 3,000 pieces.
The coin shown above is a richly toned Gem Mint State piece with immaculate, lustrous surfaces. The colors are mostly blue with a spattering of gold and purple. It is one of those coins that does not look flashy until you place it under an overhead light source.
