Owner Comments:

The 1850-C gold dollar is among the scarcest of the Charlotte mint one dollar coins. According to Doug Winter it is tied for second with the 1859-C gold dollar in overall rarity with an estimated 150 to 250 examples known in the collectable grades from VF to Mint State.

The piece pictured above exhibits "deep green gold" color combined with almost mark-free surfaces. At certain angles under the light it displays a hint of the P-L surfaces that Doug Winter says that he has seen on three or four examples of this date and mint mark combination. This piece is very well struck with all of the hair detail visible on the bust of Ms. Liberty. Generally I have found it difficult to locate Charlotte and Dahlonega gold dollars in the AU grade that were attractive. This piece is a delightful exception.
