The mintage figure for these U.S. Philippine Pesos can be deceiving. Most collector's know that the nearly 95% of all early larger size and weight pesos struck from 1903 through 1906 were melted and recoined into the smaller size peso with a reduced weight and fineness beginning in 1907 and and continuing through 1912. What most don't know is that over half of all of the newer pesos were also destroyed before World War II began. 7.5 million were sold to British India and another 7.5 million to China in 1916, and most of the silver coinage struck from 1917 through 1941 used these pesos for their silver. In early 1942, another 16.5 million were bagged, crated and dumped into the ocean to keep them out of enemy hands when the Philippines fell to the Japanese. Taking all of those losses into account, the remaining gradable population of 1910-S peso coins is estimated to be around 150,000. These coins are much more rare than one would expect by just looking at the mintage figures.

This particular peso is a beautiful clean, white specimen with just a hint of peripheral toning.
