Owner Comments:

PCGS graded MS 66, CAC approved
Variety: V-5; FS-301, '1/0 overdate'

This coin is certified by PCGS (in an OGH) as a normal date 1861 half dime. It appeared in an online-only Heritage auction session associated with the 2013 FUN show, cataloged as a normal date. I and at least two others (the winner and the underbidder) recognized it for what it is: a '1/0 overdate' variety. (It is now generally accepted that the 1861 1/0 varieties are not true overdates, but the result of a faulty date punch.) I obtained it five months later, in another Heritage auction associated with a Long Beach show. I paid about $1000 less than the earlier buyer!

Luster: 4/5
