The image on this coin, featuring President Abraham Lincoln, was first produced in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The coin replaced the Indian Head Cent. The Lincoln cent was the first cent produced with the motto In God We Trust. The inscriptions on this coins says: In God We Trust and Liberty and the date. Two United States Mint Directors, James Ross Snowden and James Pollock, served under President Lincoln's tenure in office.

The reverse of this coin was introduced in 1959. The image of the Lincoln Memorial was selected to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The image on this coin, replaced the Wheat Ears design that appeared on the reverse of the 1909 Lincoln cent.
