2009 marked the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln. The mint marked the ocaision by introducing a one-year set of four reverse designs to the Lincoln cent, replacing the Lincoln Memorial image that had been on the reverse of American pennies since 1959. There were four designs. The design featured here is the “Presidency” design that featured the construction on the dome of the US Capitol. Notice, that the dome construction was taking place during the Civil War. The detail includes cranes and scaffolding, and is especially well set off in an ultra cameo proof like my perfect specimen. Note also that this specimen was minted in bronze using the 1909 alloy combination of 95% copper with zinc and tin.
