Obverse Dies: 12 Known

For a relatively small mintage of 1,423,076 pieces, the 1890-S date presents a host of obverse and reverse dies and die pairings. To date, Twelve obverse dies and fifteen reverse dies have been identified. This research effort was facilitated by a large circulated hoard belonging to Larry Briggs.

1890 San Francisco dimes are fairly available in the lower circulated grades, but becomes very scarce in EF or better. The Small S is scarce overall, being rare in EF-AU and very rare in Mint State.

Plate Coin: Fortin 111, FS-006 Large S/Small S Variety, Well Struck Throughout With Rich Luster. Both Obverse and Reverse are Toned in Reddish-Russet Patina With Apricot, and Sea-Green Iridescence Around the Rims
