Owner Comments:

Due to the importance of nickel as a metal to the US military during World War II, the composition of the Jefferson Nickel was changed from a nickel alloy to copper, silver (35%) and manganese in 1942. In addition to the composition being a distinguishing factor, the two types are also easily differentiated by the absence or presence of a large P mintmark above the dome of Monticello. The change came in the middle of the proof run, creating two types of proof for this year. This proof was the last proof nickel until the mint started making proofs again in 1950.
