Owner Comments:

The 1857-C and her sister coin the 1859-C gold dollars are perhaps the most poorly made coins in the entire United States series. The coins are noted for poorly prepared planchets, dies and overall wrenched eye appeal.

The example shown above is a bit above average because it is sharply struck for the issue. Much of the detail in Ms. Liberty's headdress is clear, and the word "LIBERTY" is readable on her headband. The planchet is a little rough, but not as bad as some examples. The left side of the date on the reverse is weak which is typical for this issue. Doug Winter has estimated that 300 to 400 examples of this issue have survived.
