Born to humble beginnings, Lincoln would become a self-taught lawyer in Illinois and would gain the interest of that national political system with his plain spoken demeanor while serving in the Illinois General Assembly.
Elected as President just months before the start of the American Civil War, Lincoln led the country through what most consider to be its most perilous times. Lincoln would live only a few days after achieving victory over the South which ended the War. He was assassinated on April 15, 1865 making him the first President to be killed while in office.
