Owner Comments:
The 1858-C quarter eagle is the second most common Charlotte mint quarter eagle. Only the 1847-C is considered to be more common. Of course the term "common" is a relative concept when it comes to Charlotte quarter eagles. It has been estimated that only 225 of these coins survive today in all grades, which would make it a "rare date" in most other series.
After producing a string of poor quality quarter eagles in prior years (Specialist collectors rate the 1856-C as the worst.) the quality of the 1858-C $2.50 pieces showed a marked improvement. Still these coins were not as well made as their Philadelphia mint counterparts, and minor die problems and rough planchets are frequently encountered.
The coin pictured above is an attractive example for the grade. It does display some minor handling marks, and there are some minor planchet irregularities, but overall the piece is quite attractive for a Charlotte mint $2.50 coin.
