Owner Comments:

Opportunity so often is found in overlooked places that have low risk and good long-term fundamentals. One such example may be the 2008-W mint state burnished $ 25 Platinum Eagle with the Judicial design reverse. The West Point Mint struck 4,476 of the coins and of that number only 2,481 made it past quality control and into the hands of the public yielding a horrific 45 percent net scrap rate. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Mint continued to take orders for coins it did not have in stock to protect itself from the possibility of returns, giving the misleading impression that these coins were relatively common. Many speculators who bought hundreds of these coins looking at the rising price of platinum and bad mintage data felt the best thing to do was sell them to bullion houses to grab a profit. To reduce shipping costs, hundreds of them were mailed loose in boxes and plastic storage bags thus reducing the high-grade population even further. Talk about a promising convergence of troubled infancy issues for this particular issue. Most platinum collectors put together sets based on profound differences in physical appearance. The $ 25 Platinum Eagle type set has five members. Their initial mintages are shown below. Reverse Design Mintage 1997 to 2003 Eagle over Sun – Reverse Proof Appearance 200,202 2004 to 2008 Eagle over Sun – Matte Finish 73,226 2006-W Legislative design 2,676 2007-W Executive design 3,690 2008-W Judicial design 2,481.
