Owner Comments:
The 2000 panda coins were only struck in BU quality. 1999 was the last year that a proof quality silver Panda coin was issued. The BU coin had 2 varieties – a frosted ring and a mirrored ring around the perimeter of the coin on the Temple of Heaven side. This was the first year that a frosted ring panda coin was made and probably why there were 2 versions. All of the coins minted after 2000 were designed with the frosted style ring.
Mintage of BU coins is unknown; however, the mirrored ring is valued much higher than the frosted ring.
Comments:
The commemorative issue this year included a gold-mirrored ring, so really there were 3 varieties of the ringed border design.
Many fakes were made of the mirrored version due to its high value. You can usually tell the fake by comparing the panda’s nose with a non-fake coin.
