Gettysburg National Military Park, which is located in the state of Pennsylvania. The park was established to preserve and remember the Battle of Gettysburg fought between July 1-3, 1863, during the American Civil War.
The Battle was perhaps one of the most important to remember owing to two major factors. First, it was the bloodiest battle of the war with an estimated 51,000 casualties. Second, the battle is considered by most as the turning point of the war leading to the eventual surrender of the Confederate army to the Union forces of the United States of America.
Preserved within the park are over 1,300 monuments, markers and memorials. Also found in the area is Gettysburg National Cemetery which contains the bodies of 3,512 Union dead killed in the action. The cemetery was dedicated on November 19, 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln who gave perhaps his most famous speech that day known as the Gettysburg Address.
