Owner Comments:

The 1860-D half eagle is mostly seen in the VF to EF states of preservation, and is often weakly struck in the centers. This MS-62 example is well struck on both sides and has attractive luster over rich, golden surfaces.

The year 1860 marked a turning point in U.S. history. Republican, Abraham Lincoln, won the presidential election which prompted South Carolina and ultimately ten other southern states to secede from the Union and form the Confederate States of America. The Confederate government seized the Dahlonega mint along with all other Federal property in the South and operated it for a short time.

After the war, the Dahlonega mint never re-opened and the building was eventually given to the North Georgia Agricultural College in 1873. The building burned in 1878. Today a new building, Price Memorial Hall, stands on the foundations of old Dahlonega mint sit
