Owner Comments:

Despite a low reported mintage of 7,776, the number of surviving 1797 silver dollars indicates that that number is far too low. During the early days of the U.S. mint a serviceable die would not have been discarded simply because of a change in the year. It is more than likely that as many as 60,000 of the silver dollars that the mint delivered in 1798 were dated 1797.

The coin pictured above is perfect for the EF-45 grade. The piece has original surfaces and virtually no marks. Early dollar like this bring strong premiums over their more ordinary counterparts. The die variety numbers are Bolender 1 in that classic reference and BB-73 in a David Bowers’ comprehensive two volume study of U.S. silver dollars. The estimated total population for this die variety in all states of preservation is 1,300 to 2,100 pieces.
